Sabbath

Information

Sabbath

God intends that the Sabbath be regarded as something honorable, something significant, not for its own sake, but because of what it represents.

Well for us we have family and friends over for Sabbath meal. We have a praise and worship time, some bible reading which the kids do, and a meal. Sabbath morning is lazy and late. Time is spent reading, learning, studing, on the computer learning, sleeping, resting, family time. Then Sabbath afternoon we all gather again for a bible study for a couple of hours, then who ever wants to stay, stays for diner.
That's about it, what do you do.

My dh and I have been keeping the Sabbath for about 25 years. Each week we learn something new. I look forward to this day all week, pretty much basing my entire weeks activity around the Sabbath. I look at it like a date with my beloved. I anticipate and prepare all week looking forward to the day when I can spend time alone with our Creator. He has blessed me with this time to spend with Him and to put the cares and trials of the world aside. Hallelu-yah!

We are pretty new to keeping the Sabbath too. The first time we had Sabbath was 3 weeks ago. We followed Robin's book. I made a large meal for Friday with Challah, and a crock pot meal for Saturday. My husband was a bit leary, but truly enjoyed it all. He wanted to try for Sunday the next week. We tried, but it was miserable. Too hectic. We all missed the rest and peace we had experienced the previous week. So my dear husband declared that we would go back to the Friday/Saturday Sabbath. I am so pleased. I find myself looking forward to it. My kids ask me everyday if its the Sabbath yet. They really like it. That first week I noticed a difference in my husband too, he seemed more at peace with things. Our extended family thinks we are being legalistic. I haven't said anything other than that we celebrated the Sabbath. I am praying for them. It's hard for them to see that this is not bondage, but freedom.

Hi all! We're new to keeping Sabbath - actually last week was the first time that we did together as a family, and it was a huge blessing! I love knowing that we have a day set aside for worship and relationships, both with God/Messiah and with family. We're still finding what works with us, but it's interesting to me to see my husband incorporate things that his family did when he was growing up. (My in laws are conservative Jews.) I wasn't sure how he would react to keeping it from a Messianic perspective, but he really is open to it. My mother gave us a Complete Jewish Bible and we used that for various readings throughout the weekend. I loved it. We had some hiccups on what we thought we'd do and what we did do, but I'm reminding myself and my husband is learning that it isn't about what we do, but that we do it with the right mindset. :)

What does Sabbath look like in your family?
